How do airlines make such large amount of losses caused by the volcano ashes?

Okay, so I hear that airlines are making millions of pounds of losses caused by the cancelled flights. What I dont understand is, the stranded pengers have booked their tickets BEFORE the eruption, so the airlines already had their money when the event happened. So how and where are they making such mive losses???
