When did you take your child's pacifier away?

My son is 22 months old & still uses his pacifier he calls for it all the time but mostly uses it when he's taking a nap or going to bed. The dentist didn't say anything about it when we went last month. What effects will it have on him the longer he keeps it? And what's a good way to take it away?
